Description

The EDM Operator is responsible for setting up and operating Wire Electrical Discharge Machines (EDM) to manufacture precision components according to detailed engineering specifications. This role demands a high level of accuracy, technical skill, and the ability to work with complex part geometries in a high-mix, low-volume production environment.

Key Responsibilities

Setup & Operation

  • Interpret blueprints, work orders, and technical drawings.
  • Input or program EDM cutting paths using CAD/CAM software.
  • Set machine parameters including offsets, wire threading, and workpiece alignment.
  • Perform first-run inspections and monitor operations for accuracy and efficiency.

Quality Assurance

  • Conduct in-process inspections using micrometers, calipers, height gauges, etc.
  • Maintain accurate records including inspection reports and production logs.
  • Identify and report nonconformances or material issues.

Process Improvement & Collaboration

  • Partner with engineers and leads to improve machining processes and cycle times.
  • Recommend changes to setups or programs for efficiency and consistency.
  • Communicate effectively across shifts to maintain operational continuity.

Safety & Maintenance

  • Follow all safety guidelines and wear required PPE.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Perform basic preventative maintenance (e.g., wire replacement, fluid checks).
  • Document open tasks and issues for shift handoffs.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience operating Wire EDM or equivalent CNC machinery.
  • Proficient in blueprint reading, GD&T interpretation, and tight-tolerance work.
  • Skilled in the use of precision measuring tools.

Preferred:

  • Experience troubleshooting EDM-related issues.
  • Familiarity with EDM-specific maintenance and safety protocols.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and handle materials up to 35 lbs.
  • Standing for extended periods during machine operation.
  • Manual dexterity for handling small tools and components.
  • Repetitive motion with consistent precision.
