Description
The Operations Technician is responsible for 24/7 operational monitoring and support of maintenance activities at the Marlborough Operations Center, the Halvarsson Converter Station (New Haven, CT), and the Tomson Converter Station (Shoreham, NY). This position reports to the Operations Manager and Director of Operations and plays a key role in ensuring the reliable operation of the HVDC transmission asset.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Work rotating 12-hour shifts (0700–1900 and 1900–0700), including days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Emergency operations may require work from converter station locations.
- Support On-Call duties during non-scheduled days (based on availability), providing backup coverage for absences due to illness, injury, or emergencies.
- Monitor the HVDC transmission system, confirm system availability during standby/idle modes, calculate and input ramp rates, perform remote switching, manage Operations phone calls, execute operating orders, acknowledge alarms, and dispatch Operations & Maintenance personnel.
- Communicate with the Independent System Operators (ISO-NE and NYISO), CSC personnel, and company management.
- Maintain operating logs, records, disturbance reports, outage reports, equipment failure reports, and significant event documentation.
- Assist with maintenance activities, troubleshooting, and repairs during scheduled and forced outages at converter station locations.
- Provide technical support to Project Engineering for operations- and maintenance-related tasks, including researching equipment design, reviewing or developing specifications, and procuring materials.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related technical field.
- Practical, adaptable, innovative, and solution-oriented approach to problem-solving.
- Strong self-direction and motivation to learn, investigate, and understand technical systems.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; above-average mathematical proficiency.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office; familiarity with engineering analysis tools and experience with SCADA or control systems preferred.
- Ability to work non-traditional hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Demonstrated safe work practices and knowledge of OSHA and NESC standards.
- Basic understanding of electric utility operations and high-voltage transmission systems.
- General familiarity with federal, state, and local electric transmission regulations.
- Willingness to complete extensive internal training and industry certification programs (e.g., NERC or ISO equivalent), including passing required exams and maintaining certifications.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident and eligible to work in the United States.
Travel Requirements
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Willing and able to travel to converter station sites with limited notice.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as operational needs require.
